Sofia and the Antoinettes

At first glance, Sofia and the Antoinettes sounds like a band built for dramatic entrances and even more dramatic exits. In reality, it's one person, just with a rotating cast of selves. Which, as concepts go, is far more interesting.

At 23, Sofia has already created a world that's both cinematic and confessional, rich with references and emotionally precise, her writing drawing as much from old Hollywood as it does from modern auteurs, with nods to figures like Elizabeth Taylor and Bette Davis sitting comfortably alongside the influence of Sofia Coppola and David Lynch. After introducing that voice with her debut EP' WOMEN WHO LOVE TOO MUCH', she's continued to build a following drawn in by her lyricism and magnetic live presence, recently stepping onto bigger stages supporting Lola Young and proving the intensity of her recordings translates just as sharply in person. That world has extended beyond the music, too, with a residency at Bar Doña that saw her embody shifting archetypes - Women Who Cry Too Much, Women Who Smoke Too Much, Women Who Think Too Much - each performance another version of the same artist.

If you’re reading this bit you’ve successfully discovered the area of the page that lives behind the paywall. Congratulations on your spirit of adventure. Sadly, this isn’t the article.

The actual feature – the one with the quotes, the opinions and the bits where something genuinely interesting happens – is sitting just the other side of the subscription gate like a perfectly normal article minding its own business.

Instead you’ve found this: a decoy paragraph. Its job is to stand here looking convincingly article-ish while giving absolutely nothing away. No cheeky preview, no accidental spoilers, no “maybe if I scroll a bit more the whole thing appears”. Afraid not.

This is simply a respectable block of words performing the digital equivalent of someone politely closing a door. The good news is the real piece hasn’t gone anywhere. It’s still right there, full of the proper stuff you came for.

All you have to do is subscribe and the entire situation resolves itself immediately, which – while perhaps less thrilling than attempting a small act of internet skulduggery – does have the advantage of working perfectly every time.

Now, she's entering a new chapter with 'Leaving The House Is A Performance', a title that neatly sums up both the record and the project as a whole. Because Sofia and the Antoinettes isn't quite what it seems. "Sofia and the Antoinettes isn't actually a band in the traditional sense, the Antoinettes being the versions of myself I get to know as I change, a way to explain I don't think of myself as one thing."

A fluid identity runs through everything, right down to the name itself, which she found "Wherever names come from! I went there once and got given this one, and so I kept it."

Before any of this reached an audience, there was a long period of writing in private - hundreds of songs that never saw a release. She recalls the familiar loop of trying to explain it: "I guess I spent a long time sitting on so much music and writing 100s of songs that never got recorded, and then people would say 'What do you do?' and I'd say 'Well, I'm a musician' and they would say 'Well where can I listen to your music?' and I got very tired of saying 'Nowhere'."

Putting out 'Buried (in this Room)' marked a shift, even if the intention behind it was pretty specific. "There was only really one person whom I wanted to hear it. Isn't everything really only made with one person in mind?"

Progress since then hasn't followed a neat trajectory. As for whether she can feel the momentum, it "Depends on the day you ask me, really, though I know I am extremely fortunate, and LUCKY to have the team around me that I do."

"The whole world is a stage"

— Sofia and the Antoinettes

Stepping onto larger stages has only amplified the emotional side of it. Supporting Lola Young brought those songs into new spaces and hit just as hard. "Lola is an angel, like an actual angel from somewhere else, sent here to heal (I believe so, anyway). Opening those shows was a dream; I would've bought tickets to be there anyway had she not asked. There wasn't one show in which I didn't cry."

(The London Palladium: not traditionally known for tear-streaked support slots, yet here we are.)

The new EP builds on that emotional directness, anchored by a deceptively simple concept and what she describes elsewhere as a kind of "existentialism in high heels." "'Leaving the House is a Performance' is the philosophy that the whole world is a stage," she says today. "Perhaps just the acknowledgement of how much thought goes into being perceived: what you wear, what you say, who you are on any particular day." Across the record, moments like 'Vespa' add another layer, looking back with a sense of longing for a younger self and threading personal reflection through those broader ideas of identity and performance.

It's an idea closely tied to her writing style, which she frames in equally straightforward terms. "I think the word I use for it is honesty. A lot of the time, I'm writing things I don't necessarily want to admit. I love it when I'm hearing or reading something that does the same, when you know it's just utterly true."

There's no interest in tying everything up neatly. "I don't pretend to conclude anything," she says, when asked if anything about the release might come as a surprise to fans. Instead, the EP revisits earlier material alongside new work, reshaping songs while adding fresh moments. There are "Re-productions of 'Naked Chess' ('Matthew') and 'Buried', since the original demos I released. Oh, and the outro of 'Jewellery Box'."

Sofia-and-the-Antoinettes---Dork-June-2026-SATA_Vespa.jpg

Outside of the record, things aren't slowing down. There's more music ready to go, if timing allows. "There's a song I am dying to put out, so if I'm "lucky", that should happen by the summer. And I'm playing a festival this year where the lineup is so beyond perfect, I would've been in a crowd there somewhere anyway!"

Ambition for the EP isn't framed in rigid terms. "I don't really have a goal for it. I think if it finds the people who see themselves in it, the very human feelings we all feel, that is more than enough." And for the project in general, where would she like Sofia and the Antoinettes to take her? "Wherever it's meant to."

Day-to-day, it's a balance between writing and stepping into the world the songs draw from. As she puts it, "I've spent today writing with my friend Darcy and am about to leave the house to an exhibition opening (and to perform)."

If leaving the house is a performance, she's already on stage. How lucky.

Taken from the June 2026 issue of Dork. Sofia and the Antoinettes' EP 'Leaving The House Is A Performance' is out 15th May.
